“Also, the follow-up has an uneven tone overall-Marlin and Nemo are in the movie just to argue with each other, and Dory’s amnesia schtick gets old quickly. “There was a joy in exploring the never-ending ocean and its colorful inhabitants in Finding Nemo, but that’s missing in Dory,” USA Today’s Brian Truitt said in his 2016 review. While not an original film by Pixar standards, it does, of course, boast an incredible cast and the studio’s trademark spectacle. Marlin and Nemo accompany her on this journey, but after being chased by a giant squid (much like Bruce the shark in the original), Dory gets captured by the Marine Life Institute and winds up in an aquarium (remember the Australian dentist’s office in Nemo?). Unfortunately, this is a pretty formulaic affair that feels like an attempt to recreate the experience of the first film a little too closely: Dory’s memories set things off when she recalls the name of the California city where her parents once lived, and she decides to go looking for them. Like Cars or Toy Story, a sequel to Pixar’s Finding Nemo was always inevitable in a film industry that relies heavily on known quantities-established brands that older audiences know and love, perhaps, but which can also be made new again for younger generations of moviegoers.
